Long-awaited by cyclists, the 60 secure bicycle boxes deployed by the Metropole of Lyon are on their way! These closed ALTAO® Pod bicycle shelters, specially designed and manufactured by Altinnova , have begun to be installed in Greater Lyon.
Lyon, a pioneer in sustainable transport, is taking a new step forward with the launch of these secure bicycle boxes. The aim of this initiative is to make it easier to park bikes and encourage their use by offering a practical and secure solution.
By the end of 2024, Altinnova will have deployed almost 500 secure bicycle spaces in Lyon and Villeurbanne. This is in addition to the cycle parking spaces and services for cyclists already available or planned at stations and throughout Lyon.

The Greater Lyon metropolitan area has strategically chosen the locations for the Secure Bike Boxes so that they are accessible to both residents and workers. This proximity makes it easier to use bicycles as a means of daily transport, helping to reduce road congestion and carbon emissions.

Compact and urban, the ALTAO® Pod 8-seater bike box “designed” for Greater Lyon ingeniously incorporates technical features designed to get you through the streets of the capital of Gaul:
- Produced locally in Bonson (Loire) from our industrial sheet metal works and workshops: ALTAO® Pod lockers are made in France, guaranteeing superior quality and supporting the local economy. Production also allows for better quality control and adaptation to the specific needs of local authorities. This is one of our strengths at Altinnova!
- 8 spaces that also allow an anti-theft device to be placed inside in addition to the secure doors. Each box can accommodate eight bikes and is designed to allow the use of additional locks, offering double protection for cyclists.
- Secure badge opening system: The lockers are equipped with a badge opening system, ensuring controlled, secure access. Only registered users can access the bikes, reducing the risk of theft.
- A self-service pump outside completes the offer. For added convenience, we equip each box with a self-service inflation station, allowing cyclists to keep their tyres in good condition.
- ALTAO® Pod secure bike racks are energy self-sufficient. They are also self-supporting and require no preparatory work for installation. This makes them easy to install and integrate into different urban environments.

60 secure bicycle boxes gradually being deployed by the Lyon Metropolitan Area
From 15 July 2024, the 60 secure cycle boxes deployed by the Metropole of Lyon will be installed closer to residents by the end of 2024. This represents a major step forward in improving cycling infrastructure in Lyon.
The first boxes have been installed in key locations in Lyon’s 9th arrondissement. This means easier access for residents and workers in these areas.
The aim of the project is to complete the installation of this first batch of 60 boxes by the end of 2024. This will cover a large part of the city and provide a secure parking solution for a growing number of cyclists. Plans are also in place to extend this service to other districts of Lyon. All users have to do is go online to the operator’s website to express their need for a cycle parking space. Once the requests have been collated, they can be used to set up a parking space close to strategic locations in the city.
This offer complements the comprehensive range of cycle parking facilities already deployed in the region. It is in addition to the equipment and spaces installed and designed by Altinnova in car parks, on roads, in park-and-ride facilities and at stations.
